Day Fourteen - Musee's Rodin, Orsay, and Paris Modern Art

     Thursday March 1

Travel day for Logan.  Back to the US and A.  Last full day for Alayna and me to visit Orsay again, and go to the Rodin museum, which was closed on our first attempt Monday.  Also we'll try to visit the Musee d'art Moderene de la Ville de Paris or Modern Art Museum of Paris.  It is only a few blocks away, free, and features mainly Parisian artists.  And this will be our last day with Nicole until her return home in the summer.

s/spacer.gif" title="undefined"Logan departs for the airport with plenty of time to spare and he needed every minute.  After having his passport inspected several times, trying to keep an eye on the agent walking away with his boarding pass, having to unpack and repack his carryon bags, and catch the shuttle to the gate, he made it with minutes to spare.  If that wasn't enough, he missed his connection in Chicago because of 'headwinds'.  Bill finally got him home by midnight.

Meanwhile, we were greeted by the lovely lasses above at the entrance to Orsay.

You can just catch a glimpse of Sacre le Coeur at about 'eight o'clock'.

345.Monet.jpg

There is a wonderful collection of impressionist painters on the sixth floor, from Monet above, to Van Gogh, below.

This delicate sculpture caused quite a scandal when first unveiled because the model was recognized, and because of her obvious state of ecstasy.  It's said that the snake on her wrist was added later to try to explain away her apparent elevated emotional mood.

 Woman On A Park Bench

Springtime arrives a few weeks ahead of Michigan, here with trees already in bloom.  In the background you see the repetitive theme of Parisian architecture, with balconies on second, third, and fifth floors.  That, coupled with street name changes every four blocks makes for some interesting navigating.

356.Rodin.hotel.jpg

Another reason for us to revisit Paris - Hotel Biron, which houses the works of Auguste Rodin.  We strolled the gardens viewing some of the larger works but never made it inside.

How many pictures like this exist in the world, on film and media cards, with subjects emulating The Thinker?

This sculpture titled 'The Gates Of Hell' stands close to fifteen feet high.  Quite disturbing with its anguished subjects, and well it should be.

The paintings an collages above and below represent works of mainly Parisian artists, on display at the eptly named Paris Museum of Modern Art, and it's free!  You don't even need a museum pass.

Many very interesting works are on display here and this is a small sample.

As we end the evening over a wonderful chocolate tort dessert, the girls are amused once again by my scintillating humor.  "Sometimes you're not funny.", says Alayna, which must mean that most of the time I am.

This is the last picture on the media card.  Walking over the Seine I set my camera on the railing of the bridge for one last look at the City of Light.  You can just make out Quasimodo’s reading lamp near the top of the bell tower.

In the morning we pack up and leave our plasma screen TV with it's six channels and Hotel Heliopolis behind.  Back to the States and the daily grind.  This was probably the first time we ever took more than a week for vacation, and with lots of time to plan, it was the 'trip of a lifetime.'

And we're happy to share it, or at least a part of it.  There are 170 pictures posted in this journal and another 530 that there wasn't room for, or time for, or weren't pertinent, or were redundant.  But if you ever consider a trip to France or Spain, maybe there is something here that you can use to help plan your vacation, such as making sure to bring umbrella’s, raincoats, and poncho's.   And to bring water with you on your daily treks, and not expecting a refill on that cup of joe.  Don't be in a hurry.

Please consider revisiting these pages in a few months as some content may be added, updated, or details corrected or expanded.  And another page will be added soon featuring miscellaneous bits and more doors photos!

Thanks for your visit...
